Ágota Ábrán has started a wonderful project called The Story Alchemy, and it’s an inspired, beautiful, and valuable idea. I’m currently journeying with her through the story of my life so far, and it’s fascinating how, at each meeting, I’m transported into different stages of my life — I remember things, I gain new insights about what I’ve lived. I am deeply grateful for the entire experience with her; Ágota is a warm, radiant person, a talented anthropologist who creates a story-space where I feel safe and supported to share, and she gently guides me through the process. Take a look at her website — she offers different types of experiences related to our stories, whether it’s your life story, an important moment in your life, or a family/collective legacy. You can gift yourself this experience or offer it to someone dear to you. Go for it!

“Whenever my uncle came by, he smelled clean, he always had this fresh smell. And after I became very close to him, that’s what I remember most about him: that constant smell of cleanliness. And when he started working in the carpentry workshop, he smelled like clean wood, like sawdust. Not like the smell at the sawmill, which I was used to when I worked there. At the sawmill there’s also the smell of wood, of sawdust, but it’s mixed with the smell of gasoline. I like both of those. I really like the smell of gasoline, and the smell of wood too, and they go well together, they smell really good. That was my smell when I worked at the sawmill, and I like that smell. But with him, it was only clean. Just wood. He didn’t work with gasoline at all, there was nothing like that there. He didn’t have any combustion engines, nothing like that. He only had electric tools. Just that. An electric circular saw, and all the tools he had were electric.”

“Our baby’s story began exactly two years ago. That’s when we decided that we were ready for a child, and that we really wanted one. I’m sure that was the very day she was conceived. So yes, this was two years ago. I remember it being a beautiful autumn day. We were traveling home for four hours, and the whole time we talked about children, about when we will have kids, and when it’s going to be our turn, and someday, when it’s us. And then we looked at each other and thought: why do we always talk about someday? Someday, someday… why not now? Because really, this is what we both wanted.”

“The very first thing I would start with is the moment when the thought of wanting a child first took shape in us. It happened on the way home, after visiting our parents. That’s when it really began, and we talked it through in the car, saying that we wanted a child, that this was our main goal in life at that moment: to have a child. So we were both truly longing for it. What stayed with me as a very strange experience was that from the moment we said it out loud, we slipped into this particular feeling. It was an interesting feeling, and it stayed with us throughout the whole journey, the whole conversation, and even after we got home. (...) I went through so many emotions that I had never felt before.”
